Environmental Protection Expenditures in Cypriot Industry Reach €36.9 Million

A Slight Increase From €33.6 Million in 2020

In 2021, total expenditures for activities related to environmental protection in the industry sector amounted to €36.9 million, representing 0.15% of the Gross Domestic Product (GDP). This is a slight increase from €33.6 million or 0.15% of GDP in 2020, according to research results released by the Statistical Service.

Breaking down the expenditures by sector, manufacturing industries recorded expenses of €32.2 million, while the mining, quarrying, and electricity supply sectors accounted for €4.4 million. Enterprises in the water treatment and supply sector incurred expenses of €0.2 million.

Within the manufacturing sector, the production of non-metallic mineral products led with environmental protection expenses of €13.1 million. The food industry followed with €11.5 million, the pharmaceutical products and preparations industry with €1.6 million, and the chemical substances and products industry with €1.5 million.

Regarding the environmental fields targeted, €15.3 million was allocated for the reduction of atmospheric pollution, €12.6 million for solid waste management, €6.9 million for wastewater management, and €2.2 million for other activities. These other activities include noise and vibration reduction, soil and groundwater protection, and the preservation of natural resources and biodiversity.
