A Cooperation Agreement for the Athienou Municipality's transformation into a Climate-Neutral community, with a budget of €32,796 fully funded by European and national resources, was signed on April 3rd, as announced by the Municipality.

The "Climate-Neutral Athienou Municipality" partnership, approved under the LEADER 2014-2020 Rural Development Program, involves Athienou Municipality as the lead partner, along with Avdellero Community Council and A.F. Athienou Farmers Gas Ltd as collaborators.

This partnership aims to promote and implement the "European Green Deal," announced by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen, on 19.12.2019, as the European Union's new strategic approach.

According to the announcement, the expected outcomes for the beneficiaries and relevant areas include developing a Masterplan for the new Athienou Municipality, creating it as the 1st "Climate-Neutral Athienou Municipality." There will also be a development of a "Checklist" for evaluation, monitoring, and control indicators to support the municipality's transformation into a climate-neutral entity. This includes implementing policies for food self-sufficiency, promoting healthier and sustainable food following the EU's "farm to fork" strategy, and calculating the Carbon Footprint, considering CO2 emissions and absorption.
