90-Year-Old Ed Dwight Joins Blue Origin's Latest Spaceflight

Jeff Bezos' space company, Blue Origin, resumed its space tourism flights after nearly a two-year delay. Among the passengers on the recent flight was the oldest person to ever travel beyond Earth's limits.

Ed Dwight, a former U.S. Air Force pilot from the 1960s, was the first African American chosen by former U.S. President John F. Kennedy in 1961 to train as an astronaut. However, NASA did not select him for any manned missions in the Apollo program or later shuttle missions.

"I am ecstatic," said Dwight, who, at 90 years and eight months old, became the oldest person to travel to space, breaking the record previously held by actor William Shatner, famous for his role as Captain Kirk in the legendary "Star Trek" series. Shatner flew with Blue Origin in 2021 at the age of 90 years and six months.

The Journey

Dwight and five other passengers boarded Blue Origin's space capsule, mounted on a rocket at the company's facilities near the remote desert town of Van Horn. The rocket separated from the capsule, which then ascended beyond Earth's atmosphere to an altitude of 105.7 km.

The flight lasted about ten minutes, and the capsule returned to Earth using parachutes. Blue Origin has sent 37 private individuals into space with its flights, though the cost of securing a seat on the capsule has not been disclosed. Dwight's seat was funded by a non-profit organization active in space and a private foundation.
