Cyprus, Malta, and Crete are joining forces to enhance citizen participation in democratic processes for the environment through RESIsles, a new European project that kicks off today, June 6, 2024.

RESIsles aims to open a dialogue on the economic, social, and environmental challenges associated with climate change that Cyprus, Malta, and Crete, the three most populous and vulnerable Mediterranean islands, face.

The Cypriot NGO AKTI Project and Research Centre in Cyprus, in collaboration with the Hellenic Centre for Marine Research and the environmental organization Nature Trust FEE Malta, RESIsles will train over 1,700 citizens affected by climate change, with an emphasis on young people, women, and residents of rural or remote areas. School presentations, trainer training seminars, competitions, co-creation cafés, festivals for youth and rural communities, and knowledge transfer events are some of the activities that AKTI, HCMR, and NTM will implement so that citizens can understand EU policy issues and acquire the necessary tools to participate in European, national, and local democratic decision-making processes on climate and the environment.

The project will promote democratic citizen participation, contributing to the goals of the European Green Deal and the European Strategy for a Sustainable Blue Economy, fostering a transition towards a greener future.
