Cyprus Mourns the Loss of BirdLife Director Dr. Martin Hellicar

Environmental and Academic Communities Pay Tribute to a Dedicated Conservationist

The University of Cyprus and the Federation of Environmental Organizations of Cyprus (OPOK) express deep sorrow over the passing of Dr. Martin Hellicar, director of BirdLife Cyprus and a PhD holder from the University of Cyprus' Department of Biological Sciences, who died last Saturday.

According to a statement from the Council of the Department of Biological Sciences at the University of Cyprus, Dr. Hellicar was a valued member of the department, contributing significantly to environmental protection. His 2019 dissertation focused on the effects of grazing on bird communities in Cyprus, particularly the endemic Cyprus Warbler, highlighting the beneficial role of low-intensity grazing in certain habitats.

Dr. Hellicar was respected by all who knew him for his gentle demeanor, courageous opinions, and unwavering commitment to biodiversity protection. His loss leaves an irreplaceable void in the Cypriot environmental community.

The members of the Department of Biological Sciences Council extend their heartfelt condolences to Dr. Hellicar's family.

The Federation of Environmental Organizations of Cyprus (OPOK) also expresses its deep sorrow and sincere condolences over the death of Dr. Martin Hellicar.

Dr. Hellicar served as the director of BirdLife Cyprus and held various positions within the organization since 2003. Over the past two decades, he was distinguished for his efforts in protecting Cyprus's natural habitats and birdlife.

"We will remember Martin Hellicar for his dedication and contributions through our shared efforts to protect Cyprus's natural environment," the OPOK stated.
