GPS Disruptions in Cyprus Due to War
Due to Cyprus’s Proximity to Israel, Any Radio Systems Using Gps Signals Are Affected
The problem of GPS disruption due to the war in Middle East is currently manageable, said Andronikos Kakkouras, Senior Electronic Communications Officer at the Deputy Ministry of Research and Innovation, to the Cyprus News Agency. He noted that there is no countermeasure system to address the issue.
Mr. Kakkouras explained that "the problem stems from interference created by the conflicts in Israel," which include electronic warfare tactics that broadcast GPS frequency jamming signals.
Due to Cyprus's proximity to Israel, any radio systems using GPS signals are affected. "We experience interference in mobile telephony, terrestrial digital television, and any other system using GPS, such as drone applications. We have had cases where drones were lost because operators couldn't communicate with them due to the GPS issue," he added.
The problem is not continuous, he noted. "It appears periodically, disappears, and reappears at unpredictable times."
Unfortunately, he mentioned, there is no countermeasure system available to address the problem, but it remains manageable for now, he concluded.
