Economist Reveals the Most Livable Cities in the World for 2024
Vienna Named World's Most Livable City for Third Consecutive Year
For the third consecutive year, Vienna, the capital of Austria, has been named the most livable city in the world for 2024, according to the Economist Intelligence Unit.
The annual Economist report, which assesses how comfortable or sustainable a city is, evaluated 173 cities worldwide based on 30 indicators organized into five categories: stability, healthcare, culture and environment, education, and infrastructure.
Vienna secured the top spot again in 2024, earning the title of the world's most livable city for the third year in a row. The Austrian capital received perfect scores in four of the five categories but scored lower, at 93.5 out of 100, in the culture and environment category due to the lack of major sporting events.
Three other European cities made it to the top five: Copenhagen, Zurich, and Geneva. All three are notable for their moderate population sizes, which tend to result in lower crime rates, less congested roads, and efficient public transportation systems.
Two Canadian cities, Calgary and Vancouver, along with four cities from the Asia-Pacific region, Melbourne, Sydney, Osaka, and Auckland, round out the top ten.
The war-torn city of Damascus remains at the bottom of the list. The Syrian capital has been the least livable city in the index since 2013 and scored just 30.7 for 2024.
Kyiv also performed poorly, placing it in the bottom ten cities of the index for the second consecutive year.
Tel Aviv shares the same low stability score, and its infrastructure and culture and environment scores dropped by 7.2 and 6.7 points respectively, amid the ongoing conflict in Gaza. The Israeli city fell 20 positions to 112th place, marking the largest decline in this year's survey.
