Mediterranean Marie Curie Exhibition to Launch in Cyprus

Celebrating Women Scientists and Their Diverse Roles

The non-profit organization Scico Cyprus and the School of Life and Health Sciences at the University of Nicosia present the exhibition "The Marie Curie of the Mediterranean."

The exhibition will open simultaneously in various cities, including Alicante (Spain), Milan and Messina (Italy), Monastir (Tunisia), Istanbul (Turkey), and Kazin (Bosnia). In Cyprus, it will take place from September 22 to September 30, 2024, at the University of Nicosia, in The BLOCK.

This exhibition was created by the MEDNIGHT consortium (Mediterranean Night of Researchers), which includes partners from eight different Mediterranean countries.

It celebrates the achievements of women scientists and researchers from the Mediterranean who have received the prestigious Marie Curie scholarships from the European Union. The collection consists of 29 panels that present each researcher from a unique perspective, highlighting their multiple roles.

In Nicosia, each electronic panel includes a biography covering the researchers' childhoods, initial motivations, university studies, and professional achievements. These diverse backgrounds reflect the richness of the Mediterranean region while showcasing the impact of Marie Curie scholarships on their careers.

"You can be an amazing scientist and also an athlete or a mother—if you wish. You can be a marathon runner, engage in gardening, meditation, climbing, or anything else you desire! These multiple roles and identities not only do not undermine researchers' work but also contribute to their health and well-being. This is one of the main themes we want to emphasize through this exhibition," commented Dr. Myrtani Pieri, Associate Professor in the Human Biology program and the exhibition coordinator in Cyprus.

The exhibition "The Marie Curie of the Mediterranean" has been translated into nine languages and is showcased in various countries across Europe, Asia, Africa, and America. It represents researchers from 22 countries, 19 of which are Mediterranean. This global reach highlights the shared values and aspirations of the scientific community. The primary goals of the exhibition are to inspire younger generations, showcase the cultural wealth and scientific talent of the Mediterranean region, and increase the visibility of women in science and research through the lens of multiple roles.

MEDNIGHT invites citizens to discover and celebrate the stories of these extraordinary women by visiting the exhibition at the University of Nicosia. The exhibition was designed by the organization El Caleidoscopio and the Marie Curie Alumni Association, partners of the MEDNIGHT consortium, and is funded by the EU's MSCA program.
