University of Cyprus and XM Group Sign Agreement to Establish AI Chair

10-Year Agreement Between University of Cyprus and XM Group to Promote Research and Education in Artificial Intelligence

The University of Cyprus and XM Group signed an agreement on Wednesday to establish the first Chair in Artificial Intelligence at the Department of Computer Science at the University. The signing ceremony took place at the UCY campus in Nicosia.

In a press release, the University noted that XM Group will fund the Chair for a period of 10 years, with the goal of advancing research and education in AI, while also focusing on the practical application of research outcomes. The funding, exceeding one million euros, will facilitate the creation of the Chair and the appointment of a Professor to lead the initiative, the statement added.

During his address, UCY Rector Professor Tasos Christofides emphasized that the XM Chair aims to unlock the potential of AI, equipping the next generation with essential skills and knowledge. He highlighted that this partnership will reshape educational and research processes both within and outside the university.

Vice Rector of Academic Affairs, Professor Eleni-Tatiana Synodinou, outlined the objectives, actions, and future prospects of the XM Chair. She emphasized that the Chair's activities are expected to add significant value for both UCY and XM, fostering joint investments that will benefit the country and its younger generations.

Chairman of the UCY Council, Tasos Anastasiou, noted that XM Group’s decision to establish the Chair at UCY represents a "significant vote of confidence." He added, "It fills us with pride and creates the right conditions to demonstrate our potential in cutting-edge technologies."

Associate Professor Vasos Vasiliou, Vice President of the Department of Computer Science, remarked that this is the first AI Chair in the Department. He called it a "milestone" in the Department's continued development.

Professor Elpida Keravnou-Papailiou of the Department of Computer Science hailed the agreement as an "excellent development." She expressed optimism about further collaboration with XM Group, noting, "There are many areas where we can work together."

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs spokesperson, Theodoros Gotsis, conveyed the Ministry’s interest in collaborating with the newly established AI Chair, as it seeks to enhance its expertise in fulfilling its responsibilities.

Dr. Stavri Morti, co-CEO of XM Group, stated that “the establishment of the XM Chair in Artificial Intelligence aligns perfectly with our vision of leveraging cutting-edge technology to drive progress and create value.” She expressed confidence that the research and educational initiatives stemming from the Chair will enrich the academic community and have a broader impact on both society and the economy.
