Cyprus' National Strategy for Primary Sector Development to be Presented
Agriculture Ministry’s Strategy Aims to Enhance Infrastructure and Funding Opportunities, Moving Away from Subsidy Policies
The Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development, and Environment will present the National Strategy for the development of the primary sector this Thursday. The strategy was formulated after "extensive dialogue with agricultural organizations and all relevant stakeholders," according to the responsible minister, Maria Panayiotou.
Speaking before the Parliamentary Committee on Agriculture, Ms. Panayiotou explained that the goal of the new strategy, which includes eleven key actions, is to create the conditions and infrastructure necessary for financing the sector's development rather than relying on subsidy policies.
"Our aim is not to establish a subsidy-based policy but to create the conditions and infrastructure for funding the sector," the Minister of Agriculture stated during the committee's discussion on the European Union's Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) post-2027.
Agricultural organizations welcomed the Minister's announcements, acknowledging the steps taken in the right direction. However, they also highlighted the persistent issue of bureaucracy as a challenge.
