Concerns Over Potential Quarry Zone Near Protected Areas in Androlikou

Environmental Groups Urge Authorities to Explore Alternative Locations for New Quarry Zones

The environmental group "Friends of Akamas" has expressed significant concern over the advancement of a special ecological assessment for a potential new quarry zone in Androlikou, located near protected areas. They argue that alternative locations across Cyprus, away from protected areas, have not been adequately considered.

In a recent announcement, the group emphasized that this development violates the terms of the ecological evaluation report by the Department of Environment (August 2022), which did not approve the creation of a new quarry zone in Androlikou. The report also recommended exploring alternative sites in other suitable areas.

The Cyprus Federation of Environmental Organizations (of which the Friends of Akamas is an active member), alongside other environmental groups and entities, recently sent a detailed letter to all relevant departments. The letter highlights what they call the "inconsistency of the state" and warns of the environmental impact that the creation of a new quarry zone in Androlikou would have.

Additionally, the group pointed out that the opinions of Androlikou residents seem to be disregarded. In a letter dated September 20, 2024, addressed to all relevant state departments, the residents expressed their protest, stating that their village will continue to be turned into a desolate area due to the existing and proposed quarrying activities.

The Friends of Akamas are calling on the authorities to listen to these concerns and immediately halt any plans for the creation of a new quarry zone in Androlikou until all alternative locations have been thoroughly examined, as well as the potential use of alternative, suitable materials.
