New Poll: Christodoulides' Governance Faces Growing Discontent
Public Opinion on Economy, Governance, and Political Leaders Revealed in Nationwide Poll
Important findings emerge from a survey conducted by Symmetron Market Research on behalf of 2Dots Ltd, presented by OffsiteNews.
The survey, conducted between September 25 and October 5, 2024, with a sample of 600 participants nationwide, covers public opinions on the country’s trajectory, economy, key issues, evaluation of Christodoulides’ government, popularity of party leaders, political parties, MPs, and voting intentions.
The survey reveals a significant level of dissatisfaction among citizens, with 80% believing the country is heading in the wrong direction and 76% unhappy with the state of the economy. Respondents identified the three most pressing issues as inflation (specifically the rising cost of living and economic deterioration), immigration, and the Cyprus problem.
The survey paints a grim picture for President Nikos Christodoulides’ government, with 85% of respondents stating they are "not at all" or "slightly" satisfied, and 68% rejecting Christodoulides' presidency.
Annita Demetriou, President of DISY, is the only party leader with a positive approval rating, garnering 52% positive and 41% negative feedback. President Christodoulides, however, continues to face negative ratings, with 64% disapproving of his leadership and only 32% offering positive feedback.
Newly elected MEP Feidias Panayiotou saw a steep decline in popularity, with 56% viewing him negatively and only 29% positively.
The survey also evaluated six institutions. The Audit Office and the National Health System (GESY) received positive ratings, while Parliament, political parties, the Church, the Judiciary, and the Attorney General's Office recorded negative feedback. Notably, 76% of respondents disagreed with the dismissal of the Auditor General.
Regarding MPs, Irini Charalambidou and Pavlos Mylonas received the highest ratings for their work and impact. Charalambidou was rated highly by 13% of respondents, followed by Mylonas with 11%. Other notable MPs include AKEL’s Costas Costa (6%) and DISY’s Dimitris Demetriou (5%).
In voting intentions, the current trend resembles that of European elections, with DISY leading at 16.1% (22% of valid votes), followed by AKEL at 14% (19.1% of valid votes). ELAM ranks third with 7.9% (10.8% of valid votes), and DIKO follows at 6.1% (8.3% of valid votes).
Smaller parties, including Volt, DIPA, the Greens, and EDEK, gather between 1.8% and 2.4% (2.4% to 3.3% of valid votes). The undecided voters represent 17.3%, while abstention rates stand at 26.9%, an expected figure with the parliamentary elections still 18 months away.
