Cyprus-US: Visa Waiver Deal Nears Conclusion
Christodoulides Emphasizes Strategic Dialogue With the U.S. and Cross-Ministry Cooperation as Visa Waiver Announcements Approach.
"We are very close to making announcements on the issue of visa waivers with the United States," stated President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides, following the launch of the strategic dialogue with the U.S., which he described as "a very important development."
Speaking at the start of a Cabinet meeting, President Christodoulides called on all Ministers to cooperate with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, noting that yesterday's dialogue covered all Ministries in a cross-cutting manner.
He explained that the discussion focused on five areas, which concern all Ministries, not just the Ministry of Foreign Affairs.
"Therefore, I ask all of you to work with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, which has overall supervision," he said.
He mentioned issues related to attracting investments and the visa waiver, "where we are very close to making announcements."
President Christodoulides also spoke about the potential to strengthen trade relations, mainly exports, addressing the Minister of Commerce, stating that this "is something the Ministry should seriously engage in." He also addressed the Deputy Minister of Research on issues of research and innovation, while noting that defense and security topics were also discussed.
"I repeat that it is not an issue that exclusively concerns the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs has oversight, but the dialogue affects all of you," he added, requesting that any ideas or opinions be promoted within the framework of the dialogue.
Additionally, the President referred to his meeting with the U.S. Assistant Secretary of State, as well as a meeting with Antonio Costa, who will assume the role of President of the European Council on December 1.
"I was pleased to hear, from foreign representatives—not just our own assessments—recognition of our country's role in the region," he concluded.
