Naming Ceremony of Cyprus' First Zero-Emissions Vessel

The vessel is equipped with photovoltaic panels to meet part of its energy needs

The naming ceremony for the first zero-emissions vessel, "EVPLOIA APHRODITE," took place on Thursday at Larnaka Marina, showcasing Cyprus' commitment to green shipping technologies.

Shipping Deputy Minister Marina Hadjimanolis had the honor of being the vessel's 'godmother,' performing the traditional libation ceremony with Commandaria wine, a renowned ancient sweet wine of Cyprus. She expressed her pleasure in "baptizing" the vessel, which is equipped with photovoltaic panels to meet part of its energy needs.

The vessel was designed and built entirely in Cyprus, demonstrating that local expertise is aligned with global research and market trends, the Deputy Minister emphasized.

Hadjimanolis highlighted that the project is a collaboration between the Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI), SignalGeneriX, a company specializing in signal processing, and the shipbuilding office FP Marine.

"Supporting scientific research for ocean protection is a key priority for the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, contributing to a sustainable blue economy," she noted.

The EVPLOIA APHRODITE will serve as a research platform for both national and international ecosystems, benefiting from its environmentally friendly and advanced technological features.

A Step Towards a Green Future

Minister of Agriculture, Rural Development, and the Environment, Dr. Maria Panayiotou, remarked that this vessel represents a significant step towards a more sustainable and eco-friendly future for Cyprus shipping.

"The zero-emission technologies developed through the A-ZEST programme are a crucial initiative, providing innovative solutions that contribute to the green transition," Panayiotou added.

Chief Scientist for Research, Innovation, and Technology, Demetris Skourides, expressed optimism about the potential of Cyprus to leverage research, technology, and innovation in the vital sector of shipping.

Zacharias Siokouros, CEO of CMMI, concluded that research aimed at addressing challenges and finding solutions is essential for building a sustainable and competitive future.

The ceremony was attended by foreign ambassadors, consuls, partners, and associates of the Institute.
