Cyprus To Regulate State Land Allocation For Renewable Energy Development

Ministry Of Interior Moves To Competitive Bidding For State Land Use In Renewables

Since May 2023, applications for leasing or granting state land for renewable energy development have not been accepted, following instructions from the Minister of Interior, according to a statement by the Ministry. This response addresses recent comments by AKEL MP Christos Christofides in a Parliamentary Committee on Interior meeting regarding state land allocation. The Ministry noted its intention to regulate the issue by adopting a competitive bidding process.

"Regarding the proposed new regulations for state land allocation, it is noted that the Department of Lands and Surveys is consulting with the Legal Service, and the matter is in its final stage before submission for legal review," the statement says. The Ministry of Interior’s intent is to regulate the issue by adopting a bidding process to ensure the maximum possible benefit for the Republic.

Finally, it mentions, "Concerning comments about non-transparent procedures in granting state land, it is assured that all procedures outlined in the State Property (Allocation) Regulations of 1989-2017 (Regulation 173/1989) under Article 18 of the State Property (Possession, Registration, and Valuation) Law are being strictly followed."
