Amazon: $1 Billion Investment in Three Large-Scale Wind Farms in Greece
Renewable Energy Project to Power 200,000 Homes Annually
Amazon has announced its largest renewable energy initiative in Greece, with the construction of three large-scale wind farms. This investment supports Amazon’s clean energy goals while aiding Greece’s transition to renewable energy sources.
The announcement was made during the “AWS Day powered by Logicom” event in Athens on November 19, attended by Greece's Minister of Environment and Energy, Mr. Theodoros Skylakakis. The project includes:
-
Two wind farms in Vermio, Western and Central Macedonia
-
Two wind farms in Mesokorfi and Koukoures in the Peloponnese
The infrastructure is under construction and is expected to be fully operational by 2026, producing clean energy equivalent to the annual electricity needs of 200,000 Greek households.
This $1 billion investment will generate long-term economic benefits, including over 300 new jobs during its full operation. The project aligns with Amazon’s Climate Pledge to achieve net-zero carbon emissions by 2040 and Greece’s National Energy and Climate Plan, which aims for 80% of electricity production from renewable sources by 2030.
The generated energy will directly supply Amazon’s operations, local businesses, public services, and households, contributing significantly to reducing Greece’s reliance on fossil fuels, which currently accounts for 48% of the country’s energy production.
Amazon’s development partner, Aer Soléir, has already invested over €1.8 million in biodiversity programs and reforestation efforts in the Vermio area. Additional contributions include infrastructure upgrades, donations to schools, and support for local agriculture.
The investment also includes €1 million for community-focused projects, such as improving road networks in forest areas, creating recreational spaces, and enhancing forest management initiatives.
Aer Soléir CEO Andy Kinsella highlighted the collaboration with Amazon and Quantum Capital Group, emphasizing the company’s commitment to advancing Greece’s renewable energy transition.
The project is co-funded by National Bank of Greece and the Recovery and Resilience Fund, making it Amazon’s largest renewable energy agreement in the country to date.
