The Deputy Minister of Shipping, Marina Hadjimichael, announced Cyprus' candidacy for re-election to the Council of the International Maritime Organization (IMO) in Category C for the 2026-2027 period, from London.

The announcement regarding the election process, which will take place in 2025, was made during a reception hosted by the Deputy Minister at the IMO headquarters on the southern bank of the River Thames on Wednesday evening.

The Cypriot invitation was honored by representatives and officials from most of the Organization's member states, as well as the Secretary-General, Arsenio Domingues.

"The candidacy reflects our ongoing commitment to serving the Organization, its members, and international shipping, as we have since 1987 when we were first elected to the Council," Mrs. Hadjimichael stated to the Cyprus News Agency (CNA) on the sidelines of the reception.

"We once again hope for the support of our global partners, and we are confident that we can continue working together to address the challenges facing shipping today and chart a sustainable course for the future," she continued.

She concluded by noting that during the reception, in her brief greeting to the attendees, she reaffirmed "Cyprus' commitment to addressing the challenges faced by the global shipping industry and to seizing the opportunities that arise."
