Study Highlights Internet Usage, Popular Web Activities, and Subscription Trends

A recent survey conducted by the Office of Electronic Communications and Postal Regulation (OCECPR) revealed that 78% of mobile phone connections in Cyprus are monthly packages offering unlimited minutes, SMS, and data. The findings underscore changing user preferences and behavior in the country.

According to the survey, 99% of respondents are mobile phone users. Among these, 45% also have a landline phone, 87% maintain a fixed internet connection at home, and 46% subscribe to pay-TV services.

Regarding mobile connection types, the majority (78%) prefer monthly packages with unlimited minutes, SMS, and data. Meanwhile, 14% choose monthly packages with specific allowances, 5% have simple monthly subscriptions, and only 4% rely on prepaid connections.

Among the 23% of users without unlimited talk plans, 53% expressed concerns about the cost of local calls from their mobile phones.

Additionally, the survey highlighted the prevalence of mobile broadband access. Of users with unlimited data, 85% make calls via apps, citing low or no cost. In contrast, this figure drops to 57% for those with limited minutes, SMS, and data.

When asked about their most popular web activities, 94% of respondents reported searching for information, 93% read emails, another 93% used messaging apps, and 91% engaged with social media platforms such as Facebook, Twitter, Snapchat, and Instagram.

The survey was carried out by the Market Observatory team at OCECPR using a structured questionnaire. It included a representative sample of 1,002 respondents, with 602 from urban areas and 400 from rural areas.
