Entrepreneurs Call for Reassessment of Traffic Measures on Makarios Avenue
Initiative Urges Improved Accessibility to Revitalize Nicosia’s Commercial Hub
The business initiative "Nicosia – Capital of Cyprus" has called for a reassessment of traffic regulations on Archbishop Makarios III Avenue in Nicosia. In a letter sent to Nicosia’s Mayor, Charalambos Prountzos, on November 15, 2024, the group emphasized the need to enhance vehicle accessibility to the closed section of Makarios Avenue to boost visitor numbers.
According to the letter, the initiative’s board of directors has held discussions with relevant authorities and the Cyprus Association of Transport Engineers. It notes that "through the dialogue conducted, it is evident that measures can be taken in this direction without abandoning the core objectives and designs of the state. Such measures could significantly facilitate visitors’ access to both Makarios Avenue and nearby parking areas."
The letter further highlights the commitment of the initiative’s members—business owners in the commercial center—to the future of Makarios Avenue. "Our members remain optimistic and deeply invested in the heart of our city, even as the area faces instability due to unsatisfactory visitor numbers that fail to reflect its potential," the letter states, urging the municipality to take action.
Finally, the initiative acknowledges that "traffic regulations are not a panacea for revitalizing our city center." It underscores the importance of enhancing the area’s appeal and identity by incorporating elements characteristic of modern cities. These include fostering entrepreneurship, promoting green policies, encouraging cultural activities, and prioritizing aesthetic and artistic improvements. The letter concludes by calling on the state to address these pressing needs.
