What Cypriots Need to Know About the National Electronic Identity (eID)

Citizens Can Apply for Secure Digital IDs Starting January 27

Cyprus has unveiled its National Electronic Identity (eID), a secure digital tool enabling citizens to authenticate online, sign documents electronically, and access government services. Applications open January 27 for citizens over 18 holding biometric IDs. The first 30,000 eIDs are free, with additional cards priced at €15.

The eID allows access to government systems via CY Login and integrates with key platforms like social security and transportation. It also facilitates digital signatures, offering the same legal validity as handwritten ones. Future updates will expand its usage across various government departments, enhancing efficiency and reducing paperwork.

Approved by the European Commission under the eIDAS framework, the eID ensures the highest security standards for cross-border electronic transactions. Beyond government use, businesses and professionals can adopt eID for private transactions, cutting operational costs and boosting efficiency.

Issued by licensed providers, the eID is valid for three years at a cost of €50. A dedicated website, www.idme.gov.cy, offers detailed information on application and usage.
