Larnaca Coastline Faces Another Year Without Erosion Protection

Authorities Urged to Take Action as Coastal Erosion Worsens

For at least another year, the Larnaca coastline will remain unprotected against coastal erosion, particularly in areas stretching from Kiti to Agios Theodoros, according to MP Charalambos Theopemptou, Chairman of the Parliamentary Committee on Environment. Theopemptou, who has been following the issue for over 20 years, attributed the lack of protective measures to development plans in the region.

During a committee discussion on the matter, MPs urged the Ministry of Agriculture, Natural Resources, and Environment to return in October with a detailed budget plan that includes specific measures for coastal protection.

Following the meeting, Theopemptou expressed frustration, stating: “We keep hearing promises—about policies, studies, ecological assessments—but the problem persists, and erosion is getting worse.”

He highlighted severe damages, including:

  • Road reinforcements required to prevent collapses into the sea.

  • An under-construction house at risk of being swallowed by the water.

  • Farmland gradually disappearing into the sea.

Despite these visible threats, no protective measures have been taken, he added.

When asked by journalists why no action has been taken despite widespread recognition of the problem, Theopemptou cited development plans in the region. He revealed that there is a proposal for private development over the sea, including a private beach, which has hindered efforts to implement erosion control measures.
