Paphos-Polis Road: Pressure to Finalize Tenders by April – Next Steps
The total length of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous highway is approximately 31 kilometers, divided into two phases.
The Paphos-Polis Chrysochous highway is set to be completed within the timeframe of 2030–2032, according to Cyprus’s Minister of Transport, Alexis Vafeadis. The Minister aims for works to resume by September, with the first phase focusing on the stretch between Agia Marinouda and Stroumpi, which has been stalled following the termination of the contract with the company INTRAKAT. Mr. Vafeadis has urged the Public Works Department to finalize the tendering process for this ambitious project’s first phase by April.
As Offsite reports, the first phase involves constructing a two-lane road spanning 15.5 kilometers, with provisions for its eventual upgrade to a four-lane highway. Additionally, a third climbing lane will be included over more than 12 kilometers to facilitate overtaking on inclines. The road will extend northward, passing east of Marathounta and Tsada, west of Kallepia and Stroumpi, and finally connecting to the existing road after Stroumpi.
Key features of Phase A include:
-
An interchange at Agia Marinouda, connecting to the Limassol-Paphos highway.
-
An interchange at Tsada.
-
A terminal interchange after Stroumpi.
-
Two tunnels and five viaducts.
The tunnels, located in the Tsada-Kallepia region, will measure 720 meters and 290 meters, respectively. The project’s estimated cost for this phase is €96 million plus VAT, with a target completion timeframe of three years.
The second phase of the project will extend the road from Stroumpi to the entrance of Polis Chrysochous. Public Works Director Eleftherios Eleftheriou stated that tenders for this phase, spanning 15 kilometers, are expected by September 2025, with construction starting in February 2026. This section is estimated to cost €45 million.
The total length of the Paphos-Polis Chrysochous highway is approximately 31 kilometers, divided into two phases:
-
Phase A: Agia Marinouda–Stroumpi (15.5 km): Estimated completion within three years after the start of construction.
-
Phase B: Stroumpi–Polis Chrysochous (15 km): Target completion by 2031.
Additionally, the project includes provisions for expanding the highway’s connection to Paphos via Mesogi, with entry and exit points at Marathounta. This will improve accessibility for residents and visitors of surrounding communities. Construction on this segment is expected to begin in 2027 or 2028.
