Three Years of War in Ukraine: Europe Searches for a Path to Peace
International Leaders Gather in Kyiv to Reaffirm Support for Ukraine
Thirteen heads of state are expected to arrive in Kyiv today to reaffirm their support for Ukraine as the country marks the third anniversary of Russia’s military invasion. Meanwhile, the shifting stance of the U.S. government is reshaping the war’s geopolitical landscape.
“This summit could be a turning point,” Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said ahead of the gathering, which will also include 24 additional foreign leaders joining via video conference. Among the attendees in Kyiv are Spanish Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez, European Council President António Costa, and European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen.
President Zelensky honored Ukraine’s resilience on the war’s third anniversary, emphasizing the country’s unwavering resistance. “Three years of resistance. Three years of gratitude. Three years of absolute heroism by Ukrainians. I am proud of Ukraine!” he wrote on social media, thanking all those who defend and support the country. His message was accompanied by a video showcasing the daily lives of Ukrainians on the front lines.
“Today, we are in Kyiv because Ukraine is Europe. This fight is not only about Ukraine’s survival but also about Europe’s future,” said European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen in a social media post. She shared a video of her arrival in Kyiv alongside European Council President António Costa.

En route to Washington, French President Emmanuel Macron reiterated that France and its European allies remain committed to achieving peace through a just, stable, and lasting resolution. He emphasized that European security will be strengthened through successful diplomatic negotiations.
As Europe faces the Russian threat and a shift in the U.S. stance, European leaders are working to mobilize further action. António Costa announced an emergency EU summit on March 6, describing this as a decisive moment for Ukraine and European security.
Friedrich Merz, leader of Germany’s Christian Democratic Union (CDU) and the anticipated next chancellor following recent elections, underscored the need for Europe to develop independent defense capabilities. He called for a self-sufficient European defense alternative to NATO’s current structure.

Former U.S. President Donald Trump has stirred controversy by aligning with Russia’s narrative, blaming Ukraine for the war that began on February 24, 2022. Reports indicate he has begun negotiations with Russia without involving Ukraine or European nations. Trump has also stated that the U.S. should be compensated “in kind” for its military and financial aid to Kyiv, suggesting Ukraine’s rare mineral resources as repayment.
Zelensky firmly rejected any settlement that would burden future Ukrainian generations with financial obligations.
Demonstrations in support of Ukraine took place in Paris, Prague, and Vilnius, as well as outside the Russian embassy in Washington and various U.S. cities. More rallies are expected today, particularly in London.
