Cyprus Conducts First Controlled Burn for Wildfire Prevention

Forest Department and CERIDES Implement Innovative Fire Management Strategy

For the first time, the Cyprus Forest Department and CERIDES - Excellence in Innovation and Technology at the European University Cyprus carried out a controlled burn in a forested area. The initiative was conducted under strict safety measures and supervised by local and international fire management experts.

The operation, part of a pilot project for an innovative fuel management tool, aims to enhance wildfire prevention and mitigation efforts. The controlled burn follows internationally recognized safety protocols and is a key deliverable of the SEMEDFIRE (South-Eastern Mediterranean Excellence in Fire Science) project, co-funded by the Horizon Europe program.

The initiative is carried out under the auspices of the Minister of Agriculture, with CERIDES coordinating the project.

Training on the controlled burn technique was provided by the Pau Costa Foundation, an internationally recognized organization specializing in wildfire prevention and biodiversity conservation. This method is particularly effective in abandoned rural areas, where strategic land management plans can help sustain ecosystems.

According to the Forest Department, the abandonment of rural areas has led to an excessive buildup of flammable vegetation, particularly in mountainous and semi-mountainous communities near forests. These areas face an increased risk of large-scale wildfires, endangering human lives, infrastructure, and the environment.

“Controlled burning is a valuable tool for Cyprus,” the statement noted. “It allows for the safe removal of hazardous fuel, significantly reducing wildfire spread and strengthening overall fire protection in forested and agricultural areas.”

The method adheres to strict meteorological, environmental, and organizational protocols, which have been handed over to the Forest Department for further training and safe implementation.

The Forest Department will continue to apply controlled burns following established guidelines and protocols, integrating the method into Cyprus’ overall wildfire prevention strategy. This approach will enhance existing fire management measures while supporting ecological balance and biodiversity conservation.
