Cyprus Takes the Stage in New York as a Rising Energy Investment Hub
Andreas Mylonas Moderates Key Energy Panel at Capital Link Forum
At the 3rd Capital Link Cyprus Business Forum in New York, Andreas Mylonas had the honor of moderating a high-profile panel on “Investment Opportunities in the Energy Sector,” bringing together senior voices from ExxonMobil, Eni, McKinsey & Company, and Breakthrough Energy Ventures. The panel explored how Cyprus and the Eastern Mediterranean region are rapidly evolving from traditional natural gas development toward a more diversified energy mix, including renewables, storage solutions, and next-generation energy technology.
A central theme of the discussion was the role of natural gas in the energy transition, not as an endpoint but as a bridge toward cleaner systems. Panelists emphasized the growing importance of regional partnerships—such as the Cyprus–Egypt infrastructure agreement—and highlighted opportunities in digital grid systems, energy storage, and startup investment in energy tech.
What stood out during the conversation was the growing focus on integrated systems that combine gas, renewables, and digital innovation to build scalable and resilient energy networks. This shift, according to the panel, positions Cyprus as an attractive destination not only for large-scale infrastructure investment but also for venture capital and early-stage companies in the clean energy space.
Cyprus’ Minister of Energy, George Papanastasiou, joined the panel and laid out his vision for the island’s energy strategy, underscoring the government’s commitment to a balanced and forward-looking approach.
Adding further weight to the forum, President Nikos Christodoulides delivered a keynote speech, reaffirming Cyprus’ dedication to regional energy leadership, economic openness, and cross-border collaboration.
Summarizing the momentum behind Cyprus’ positioning, Mylonas noted during the panel:
“Cyprus has all the ingredients to remain a compelling energy investment destination—strategic location, proven natural gas reserves, a growing clean energy agenda, and strong regional partnerships. But beyond resources, what truly stands out is the country’s openness to innovation. Whether it’s infrastructure, storage, or technology pilots, Cyprus is positioning itself as an emerging, forward-looking energy hub.”
The event concluded with warm thanks to Capital Link for organizing the forum, and to Polys Hajioannou, Chairman & CEO of Safe Bulkers, Inc., for hosting the Speakers' Dinner at the iconic New York Yacht Club, and extending an invitation to the NYSE Closing Bell Ceremony in honor of Cyprus.
