Cyprus–Israel to Sign Electricity Interconnection Agreement Under IMEC Framework by Year-End
Deal Advances Energy Security and Connectivity Goals as Aphrodite-Ishai Gas Negotiations Progress
The agreement for the electricity interconnection between Cyprus and Israel, as part of the India–Middle East–Europe Economic Corridor (IMEC), is expected to be signed within the year, according to a joint statement issued by the Office of the Prime Minister and the Ministry of Energy of Israel.
“During a diplomatic meeting held on Sunday, May 4, 2025, between Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and the President of the Republic of Cyprus, Nikos Christodoulides—attended by Israel’s Energy Minister Eli Cohen and Cyprus’s Minister of Energy, Commerce and Industry, George Papanastasiou—it was agreed that the electricity cable (part of the IMEC project) linking the two countries, and eventually connecting Cyprus with Europe, will be signed by the end of the year,” the statement reads.
According to the announcement, the electricity interconnection is considered critical for energy security, particularly for Israel, which is described as an "energy island." The project is expected to become a key link in the broader energy corridor connecting India with Europe, thereby enhancing East–West connectivity through the IMEC initiative.
The statement also noted that the pending agreement between Cyprus and Israel regarding the shared Aphrodite–Ishai natural gas field was brought to the discussion table. Negotiations on this issue are reportedly at an advanced stage, with the agreement anticipated to be finalized and signed within the next two months.
IMEC is an international infrastructure initiative aimed at creating a corridor linking India, the Middle East, and Europe. The initiative has been promoted with strong backing and leadership from the United States.
