Shakespeare in the Mountains

A Mini Theatre Festival in Platres, Cyprus: A Playful Ode to William Shakespeare

The picturesque village of Platres becomes the stage for a unique, open-air mini theatre festival dedicated to the timeless playwright William Shakespeare, offering site-specific performances and artistic surprises for audiences of all ages. Curated by director Paris Erotokritou, this tribute takes a fresh, playful approach to Shakespeare’s work—introducing his world to newcomers and offering seasoned theatre lovers a new lens through which to experience his timeless stories.

At the heart of the festival lies a promenade performance between Platres’ two waterfalls—Caledonia and Millomeris. Six actors, scattered along a scenic trail, will perform iconic monologues and scenes from Shakespeare’s plays. The audience, guided by the performers themselves, will traverse footpaths, hotels, and historic churches, encountering Shakespeare in unexpected corners of the village, where actors may emerge from the forest or fade into the trees as stories unfold.

In parallel, a children’s shadow theatre workshop will take place in the village square for ages 6–14. Led by artist Maria Markou, the workshop will introduce children to the beloved characters of A Midsummer Night’s Dream, guiding them to create their own shadow puppets and explore the fundamentals of shadow play.

In the afternoon, five actors and a musician will present Shakespeare’s narrative poem Venus and Adonis, while the day will culminate with a staged reading featuring acclaimed Cypriot actress Agni Scott. In this performance, Desdemona — as envisioned by Nobel laureate Toni Morrison — meets the cinematic Othello of Orson Welles.

With a wide range of events designed to rediscover both Shakespeare and the enchanting landscape of Platres, this festival promises a rich, multisensory celebration of theatre, nature, and imagination.
