Cannes Film Festival 2025: These Are the Films Representing Cyprus
Productions and Co-Productions Feature in Key Cannes Programs, Highlighting Growth of Cypriot Cinema
Cyprus is poised to make a strong impression at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival with a selection of productions and co-productions, including Dodekameron/Motherwitch, YES, and Aisha Can’t Fly Away, according to a press release issued by the Department of Contemporary Culture of the Deputy Ministry of Culture.
The press release also notes that on May 17, the documentary When the Swallows Are Silent by Giorgos Avraam and Konstantinos Patsalides—completed with the support of the Deputy Ministry—will be screened at the historic Danaos cinema in Athens.
The Deputy Ministry emphasized that these achievements highlight the importance of international collaborations and reflect the continuous upward trajectory of Cypriot cinema, as demonstrated by its presence at one of the world’s leading artistic events.
Specifically, the Cypriot production Dodekameron/Motherwitch, directed by Minos Papas and produced by Konstantinos Nikiforou (Caretta Films), is a co-production with North Macedonia and the United States. It has been selected for the Cannes Frontières Buyers Market, held in parallel with the Cannes Film Festival and part of its official Marché du Film program.
The film YES, directed by Nadav Lapid, is a co-production supported by the Deputy Ministry of Culture, with Cypriot co-producer Marios Piperides (AMP Filmworks). It will have its world premiere in the Quinzaine des Cinéastes program of the Cannes Film Festival.
As for the Egyptian production Aisha Can’t Fly Away by Morad Mostafaa and Sawsan Yusuf, the Ministry notes that it was first presented as a project during the 2022 Dot.on.the.Map Industry Days, part of the Cyprus Film Days International Festival. The film has now been selected for the Un Certain Regard competition section at the Cannes Film Festival.
