How Much Economic Boost Will EuroBasket Bring to Cyprus and Limassol?
Limassol to Host Group Stage Matches, Drawing Thousands of Visitors and Showcasing Long-Term Investment in Sports Infrastructure
Organizers of FIBA EuroBasket 2025 are highlighting the multiple benefits of hosting the prestigious basketball tournament in Cyprus, and specifically in Limassol, where six national teams will compete in the group stage. According to their announcement, the event is expected to attract a five-digit number of visitors to the city.
The tournament will take place at the Spyros Kyprianou Sports Center in Limassol, from August 28 to September 4, 2025.
Organizers anticipate a significant boost to the local economy, estimating a financial impact exceeding seven figures, primarily benefiting the hospitality and food service sectors. They also underline the value of international exposure for the city, citing this as the reason why the event’s two main institutional sponsors are the Deputy Ministry of Tourism of the Republic of Cyprus and the Municipality of Limassol.
They note that the previous EuroBasket tournament in 2022, which was co-hosted by Germany, Italy, Czech Republic, and Georgia, drew an audience of over 300 million viewers worldwide, highlighting the global appeal of the event.
Organizers also point to indirect benefits, explaining that hosting a sports event of this magnitude demonstrates Cyprus’s potential as an investment destination, particularly in areas linked to sports and infrastructure.
A key example is the renovation of the Spyros Kyprianou Sports Center, an investment by the Cypriot state, which will not only serve the 2025 tournament but also extend the venue’s lifespan by more than 20 years. The upgraded facilities will allow other sports federations to pursue hosting international competitions in the future, making the center a long-term asset for Cyprus’s athletic development.
Finally, organizers stress that this is a “first-class opportunity” for the Cyprus National Team to gain valuable experience competing against top international basketball stars.
