The Moon to Get Its Own Time Zone
U.S. House Committee Approves 'Celestial Time Standardization Act' to Support Future Lunar Operations
A time zone will soon be established for the Moon in preparation for upcoming space missions.
A bill approved by the U.S. House of Representatives Committee on Science, Space, and Technology calls on the NASA Administrator to develop a method for coordinating and measuring time on the Moon.
Titled the Celestial Time Standardization Act, the bill was passed by the Committee and will be submitted to the full House for a vote.
If approved by the House and subsequently by the U.S. Senate, the bill will be presented to President Trump for signing into law.
According to U.S. media, the bill directs NASA to establish a lunar time zone “to support future operations and infrastructure on the Moon and other celestial bodies beyond Earth, as well as for other purposes.”
