My Experience at PMI Technovation 2024: From Tradition to Innovation
The data and science are there. A smoke-free future should be the top priority for the industry and governments, rather than the politics of who leads the change and how.
Recently, I had the opportunity to attend the PMI Technovation 2024 event in the charming town of Neuchâtel, Switzerland. As someone who is passionate about the cause of a smoke-free future, I found this event to be a significant learning experience that not only deepened my understanding of PMI's vision but also clarified the science and strategy behind their smoke-free product line.
Engaging Panels and Insightful Discussions
The event was carefully designed to be informative and engaging. Each speech and panel had a clear, coherent message, delivered by communicative and approachable speakers. One of the highlights for me was how open the Q&A sessions were, with members of the press asking pointed questions that led to transparent and detailed responses from PMI representatives
Throughout the event, it became clear that PMI’s approach is built on solid consumer insights, scientific research, and a commitment to harm reduction. Learning about the science behind the products was particularly enlightening. Unlike traditional cigarettes, PMI’s smoke-free alternatives are designed to eliminate combustion, which significantly reduces the harmful substances inhaled compared with cigarettes’ smoking. This is a critical distinction and one that underscores why these products can play a vital role in the journey towards a smoke-free future.
A Look Behind the Scenes at the Factory
The next day, we were given a unique opportunity to visit one of PMI’s factories, where we saw firsthand how some of these innovative products are made. The level of care and precision that goes into production was impressive. What stood out to me even more was the approachable and enthusiastic nature of everyone we met, from the CEO to factory workers. It was clear that the company’s culture fosters openness and collaboration.
Can PMI Lead the Charge for Change?
I understand the skepticism many have: can a company that was once a major player in the traditional cigarette market now be trusted to lead the charge in providing better alternatives to those smokers that would otherwise continue smoking? It’s a fair question. However, after attending this event, my perspective is that PMI has the intelligence, consumer data, and cutting-edge technology needed to offer legal age smokers attractive and viable smoke-free options.

If PMI can leverage its resources to offer products that appeal to adult smokers and encourage them to switch, then that is a step forward, regardless of past perceptions. The science supports the claim that these alternatives are less harmful, and that, for me, is the crux of the matter.
Advocating for a Smoke-Free Future
If there is one takeaway I’d like to emphasize, it is this: advocacy for a smoke-free future involves understanding what causes the harm in traditional cigarettes in the first place, and the available alternatives with the science behind them. While debates will and should continue, they shouldn’t result in inaction, as it is crucial to focus on the goal of reducing smoking rates. Events like PMI Technovation 2024 play an essential role in shaping that dialogue, and I’m glad to have been a part of it.
