Thomas A. Kazakos: First-Ever Cypriot to Lead Global Shipping Organization

The Cyprus Shipping Chamber has proudly announced the historic appointment of Thomas A. Kazakos, its accomplished Director, as the next Secretary General of the International Chamber of Shipping (ICS), effective April 1, 2025. This marks the first time a Cypriot will lead the globally renowned maritime organization.

According to the Cyprus Shipping Chamber, Kazakos will succeed Guy Platten, who is retiring from the role. This prestigious selection was made unanimously by the ICS Board of Directors during a specially convened meeting earlier yesterday.

The Chamber highlighted that this momentous decision is a significant honor for both Cyprus and its vibrant maritime industry.

ICS’s Role and Global Significance

The International Chamber of Shipping, headquartered in London, represents over 80% of the world’s commercial fleet ownership through its national shipowner association members. As a preeminent organization, ICS actively and extensively advocates for the interests of the global shipping industry, engaging dynamically with numerous international intergovernmental organizations, including the International Maritime Organization (IMO).

The Chamber expressed immense pride in Kazakos’s appointment, noting that his leadership will be pivotal during such a critical period for the global maritime sector.
