Meria, Stefani and Despo Maouri: From Leftover Materials to New Possibilities
The Growth Circle by Cablenet: How Maouris Oikoset and Ecoset Concept practice sustainable circular design.
Meria Maouri, Head of Business Development, Stefanie Maouri, Head of Quality Control, and Despo Maouri, Director, Maouris Oikoset and Ecoset Concept, share the story of a family business entering its second generation, while exploring how sustainability and creativity can shape the future of construction and interior design.
One of the most distinctive parts of this evolution is the Ecoset Concept, an initiative built around the reuse of leftover materials. Instead of allowing marble, ceramics and other construction materials to go to waste, they transform them into decorative objects with a new purpose and identity.
The idea was born from a combination of design, sustainability and the desire to create something that felt personal, while still connected to the family business. Each piece is handmade, often designed in collaboration with the final customer, and shaped around personal taste, available materials and the story behind each object.
The process begins with sourcing and collecting materials that would otherwise be discarded. These pieces are then sorted according to type, quality and usability, photographed and presented to clients depending on the needs of each project. From there, the design process begins. Although the company’s equipment and technical expertise make production possible, the final result still depends heavily on craftsmanship and hand-finishing.
For the three sisters, sustainability is not a box to be ticked or a trend to follow. It is something that must be genuinely embedded in the way a business operates. As they explain, customers can understand when sustainability is authentic and when it is simply being used as a marketing tool.
The conversation also explores the reality of working in a family business. The sisters speak openly about the challenges of balancing personal relationships with professional responsibilities, but also about the strength they draw from one another.
Looking ahead, they see technology, innovation and new materials as essential parts of the company’s future. As importers and suppliers, they aim to bring new trends and solutions to the Cypriot market, while continuing to work with partners who share similar values around quality, responsibility and environmental awareness
