Christodoulides Awaits Green Light for Turkish Cypriot Measures

Health and economy initiatives hinge on response from Tufan Erhürman.

President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides is preparing to announce two unilateral measures for the benefit of Turkish Cypriots, according to informed sources. However, the same sources note that the President has first requested a positive response from Turkish Cypriot leader Tufan Erhürman.

When asked which sectors the measures concern, the sources indicated that they relate to healthcare and the economy.

According to the same information, President Christodoulides does not wish to create tension between himself and the Turkish Cypriot leader. For this reason, he has sought Erhürman’s agreement and is awaiting his response before proceeding with any official announcements.

The effort, the sources add, is aimed at building a personal relationship between the two leaders.

At the same time, sources report that the personal envoy of the UN Secretary-General, María Ángela Holguín, is expected to visit Cyprus by the end of the month.

Ms Holguín is expected to travel to Cyprus after holding contacts in Geneva, Brussels, and Washington, they add.

She has requested a meeting with President Christodoulides, who has accepted her request. At the same time, the President is reported to have proposed holding a new joint meeting with Ms Holguín and Mr Erhürman, although no response has been received so far.
