Cyprus Introduces Annual Gender Equality Award in Maritime Sector
Empowering Women in Cypriot Shipping
The Council of Ministers approved a proposal from the Deputy Ministry of Shipping for the establishment of the "Gender Equality Award in Cypriot Shipping," which will be conferred annually.
According to a statement from the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, this initiative primarily aims to "enhance the visibility and recognition of individuals and organizations, irrespective of their gender, who have made significant contributions to gender equality and women's empowerment in the Cypriot maritime sector."
The primary goal of the award is to "highlight the crucial role women play in the maritime sector, thereby challenging the prevailing perception of a male-dominated industry."
Furthermore, the initiative seeks "to promote and adopt policies aimed at achieving a work environment that supports women as equals, ensuring they enjoy the same rights and opportunities as their male counterparts in comparable positions."
The Deputy Ministry of Shipping believes that the establishment of this award will serve as a vital tool in achieving these objectives. These goals are fully aligned with the policies advocated by the International Maritime Organization and the Commissioner for Gender Equality's Office, with whom the Deputy Ministry maintains a close collaboration.
Finally, it is reminded that the promotion of gender equality in the maritime industry is included in the Deputy Ministry of Shipping's Annual Action Plan for 2023-2024. To fulfill this commitment, specific actions have been outlined, including the establishment of the aforementioned award.
