EU Prosecutor Takes Over Complaint on EU Funds Misuse by Active Cypriot Official

Anti-corruption authority ends inquiry after preliminary assessment.

An investigation by Cyprus’ Independent Authority Against Corruption into an anonymous complaint alleging the mismanagement of European Union funds by a serving official has been formally terminated, after the case was referred to the European Public Prosecutor’s Office (EPPO).

According to an official announcement, the Authority concluded that the investigation falls outside its substantive jurisdiction, as EU law designates the EPPO as the competent body to investigate potential offences involving EU financial interests.

The Independent Authority Against Corruption confirmed that it had received an anonymous complaint alleging improper handling of EU funds by an active public official. The complaint was initially examined on a preliminary basis, in line with national legislation governing corruption-related allegations.

However, the Authority stressed that, under EU Directive 2017/1371, responsibility for investigating potential mismanagement or misuse of European Union funds rests with the European Public Prosecutor’s Office, which has access to specialised mechanisms, cross-border investigative powers and relevant financial data.

As a result, the complaint was formally forwarded to the EPPO for further action, and the Authority terminated its own investigative process.
