EU to Turkey: Get Back to the Cyprus Peace Table
Brussels urges Ankara to back UN-led negotiations and end unilateral actions in Varosha.
The European Commission has called on Turkey to reaffirm its commitment to UN-led negotiations aimed at resolving the Cyprus issue.
In its annual report on Turkey’s EU accession progress, the Commission stresses the need to avoid unilateral actions that could heighten tensions on the island and hinder the resumption of peace talks.
The report reiterates that Brussels remains fully dedicated to achieving a comprehensive settlement of the Cyprus problem within the framework of the United Nations, based on the relevant UN Security Council resolutions and the principles of the European Union.
The Commission also highlights Turkey’s continued intransigence, noting that Ankara persistently supports a two-state solution in Cyprus, contrary to UN parameters.
Furthermore, the report points out Turkey’s refusal to cooperate with the Republic of Cyprus on security matters, including counter-terrorism efforts, and its ongoing veto of Cyprus’s applications to join international organisations.
Despite repeated international condemnations, Turkey has not reversed its actions regarding the reopening of the fenced-off area of Varosha, effectively creating new faits accomplis on the ground.
The Commission also records the illegal arrest and detention of five Greek Cypriots since 19 July.
