Former Ukrainian Minister Survives Attempted Kidnapping in Larnaca

Police probing whether political motives are behind the dramatic attack in Oroklini.

An attempted kidnapping of a 51-year-old Ukrainian businessman—who claims to be a former minister in his country—has triggered an intensive police investigation in Larnaca, raising concerns that the incident may carry political dimensions.

Suspicious Van, Violent Attack and Abrupt Escape

The incident unfolded around 19:20 on Thursday evening in the tourist area of Oroklini. The man was at home with a 36-year-old woman and her 72-year-old father when they noticed a suspicious commercial van parked near the residence. Three individuals were inside.

According to the complainant, he and the 72-year-old approached the vehicle to ask the occupants why they were there. As they neared, the three masked men allegedly attacked, attempting to force him into the van. Both residents resisted, prompting the assailants to flee on foot—abandoning the vehicle at the scene.

Police officers arriving shortly after discovered the abandoned van bearing licence plates belonging to another vehicle. Inside, authorities found a pistol with an empty magazine along with additional forensic evidence, now undergoing scientific examination to determine whether the perpetrators left behind DNA or other identifying clues.

Both the 51-year-old and the 72-year-old sustained minor injuries.

Possible Political Angle Under Review

During questioning, the Ukrainian businessman told investigators he had previously served as a minister in the Ukrainian government—specifically as Minister of Energy roughly a decade ago, according to information obtained by cyprustimes.com. This claim is being verified by police.

The possibility that the incident may be politically motivated has not been ruled out, prompting further scrutiny by the Larnaca CID. Authorities are exploring all scenarios, including whether the alleged attempted abduction was linked to the victim’s former governmental role.

Police Hunting Three Suspects

Larnaca investigators have launched a full-scale manhunt for the three individuals who fled the scene. Significant developments are expected as forensic tests progress, especially those related to DNA traces that may have been left in the abandoned vehicle.

The case remains open, with police examining the circumstances surrounding the suspects’ presence in the area and the true motive behind the attempted kidnapping.
