Lebanon–Cyprus Energy Cooperation Accelerates After Aoun’s Visit

The Cypriot government has additionally decided to offer approximately 1,000 job opportunities to Lebanese citizens.

The recent visit of Lebanese President Joseph Aoun to Cyprus has already begun to yield tangible results, particularly in the areas of border demarcation and energy cooperation.

According to the Al-Nashra website, a Cypriot delegation arrived in Beirut to initiate discussions focused on launching the process of maritime border demarcation between Lebanon and Cyprus.

This step is expected to boost natural gas exploration efforts and expedite the return of international oil companies to Lebanon, following a prolonged period of stagnation in the sector.

Reportedly, the meeting between President Aoun and his Cypriot counterpart, Nikos Christodoulides, held a few days ago in Larnaca, resulted in a high level of mutual understanding. Cyprus expressed its willingness to assist Lebanon in the energy sector, including the supply of electricity. The island nation possesses large-scale electricity generation units and is capable of delivering power to Lebanon through an undersea cable.

Informed sources told Al-Nashra that the meeting between the two presidents also outlined an economic and investment roadmap through reciprocal investments between the two countries. Agreements on these initiatives are expected to be signed soon during follow-up visits by specialized delegations.

The strategic importance of this cooperation is further underscored by Cyprus’s upcoming presidency of the Council of the European Union in five months. This role is expected to positively influence Lebanon, a point emphasized by the Cypriot president during Aoun’s visit. He reaffirmed Cyprus’s support for Lebanon’s inclusion in all discussions related to European aid and efforts to strengthen strategic cooperation.

It is also worth noting that Cyprus remains an attractive economic and investment destination for Lebanese nationals. The Cypriot government has additionally decided to offer approximately 1,000 job opportunities to Lebanese citizens.
