Odysseas Michaelides: "A Dark Day for Cyprus"
Supreme Constitutional Court Dismisses Cyprus Auditor General
The Supreme Constitutional Court, convened as a council, unanimously decided on Wednesday to dismiss Cyprus' Auditor General, Odysseas Michaelides.
According to the decision by the eight judges of the Supreme Constitutional Court, it was determined that the Auditor General, based on the totality of the evidence, "overstepped boundaries and demonstrated behavior unbefitting the position, rendering him incapable."
"We find him guilty of inappropriate conduct," the ruling stated.
The decision to dismiss the Auditor General is binding on the President of the Republic, to whom it will be immediately communicated.
The ruling spans 209 pages.
Odysseas Michaelides described today as a "dark day for Cyprus," adding that the decision is a blow to freedom of expression and the public's demand for the fight against corruption.
He also alleged that "there was a coordinated effort to oust me, initiated by the former President of the Republic and the heads of the Legal Service, which the current President of the Republic later joined."
"I am being dismissed as worse than Rikkos Erotokritou," he said, adding that it is clear he clashed with the system, which led to his removal.
Michaelides stated that he will continue his fight against corruption and will consult with his legal advisors to consider his next steps.
In response to a question, he said that he feels a duty, as he always has, to serve his country, noting that this does not necessarily mean entering politics but rather engaging in public affairs.
"I leave with a clear conscience," he concluded.
