President Nikos Christodoulides Travels to Brussels

for Crucial Two-Day European Council Summit

Marking the final summit of the Cyprus EU Council Presidency, President Nikos Christodoulides will present the island's legislative achievements, address key geopolitical issues, and hold high-level meetings with EU leadership.

High-Level Leadership Bilaterals

Cyprus President, Nikos Christodoulides, travels to Brussels on Thursday to participate in the two-day European Council meeting, on the sidelines of which he is to hold a meeting with the President of the European Council, António Costa.

During the European Council, the last under the Cyprus Presidency of the Council of the European Union, President Christodoulides will present a review of the work carried out during the Cyprus Presidency and will give a joint press conference with the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission, António Costa and Ursula von der Leyen.

At midday on Thursday, the President will hold a bilateral meeting with the President of the European Council.

Cultural Exhibits and Political Pre-Summits

He will then deliver an address at the opening of the “Cyprus Insula” exhibition, organised by the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in cooperation with the Bank of Cyprus Cultural Foundation.

Subsequently, the President of the Republic will participate in the European People’s Party summit, focusing on preparations for the European Council meeting.

Before the start of the European Council proceedings, President Christodoulides will take part in the signing ceremony of the Joint Declaration of the Council, the European Parliament and the European Commission entitled “Europe for Culture, Culture for Europe”.

Legislative Prioritisation and Presidency Overview

Following this, President Christodoulides, together with Costa and von der Leyen, will review progress on the legislative priorities for 2026, as well as the “One Europe, One Market” Roadmap, which was signed in Cyprus in April.

At the opening of the European Council meeting, and in the context of the exchange of views with the President of the European Parliament, President Christodoulides will present an overview of the achievements of the Cypriot Presidency of the Council of the EU, “highlighting the significant progress achieved on a range of European priorities, as well as the tangible results delivered through the consistent and effective exercise of the (Cyprus) Presidency”, according to a press release issued by the Presidency.

Geopolitics, Financial Frameworks, and Regional Security

The President of the Republic will then participate in the European Council discussions on Ukraine and attend a working dinner of EU leaders focusing on competitiveness.

On Friday, 19 June, President Christodoulides will attend a meeting of “like-minded leaders” on migration.

He will subsequently participate in the European Council proceedings, during which he will present the “significant progress” achieved under the Cyprus Presidency regarding the Multiannual Financial Framework.

President Christodoulides will also attend a working lunch of EU leaders to discuss the situation in the Middle East. The European Council will also address issues relating to defence, drug trafficking, migration, and other matters of common European interest.

Before departing Brussels on Friday, the President will hold a joint press conference with the Presidents of the European Council and the European Commission.
