UN Envoy María Ángela Holguín to Visit Cyprus Before Month’s End
Preparations underway for informal conference and resumption of Cyprus talks.
The Personal Envoy of the UN Secretary-General on the Cyprus issue, María Ángela Holguín, is expected to arrive in Cyprus before the end of the month, President of the Republic Nikos Christodoulides said, noting that a joint meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader should take place during her visit.
Responding to a journalist at the Archbishopric, where he delivered the memorial address at the national memorial for EOKA hero Pantelis Katalaris, the President said that “Ms Holguín will be in Cyprus before the end of January. We are in contact with her.”
He added that prior to her arrival in Cyprus, Ms Holguín will visit several other countries, particularly in the context of preparatory work aimed at convening an informal enlarged conference, as agreed, “at which the resumption of talks from where they left off at Crans-Montana will be announced.”
As President Christodoulides stated, there is “no inactivity whatsoever; developments are ongoing,” noting that Ms Holguín herself will announce her programme and the specific dates.
“Before the end of the month she will be in Cyprus. As part of her presence, a joint meeting with the Turkish Cypriot leader must also take place,” he underlined.
