VideoGate: Why the Anti-Corruption Authority Says It Can’t Investigate
Criminal investigation by Law Office overrides independent action.
The Independent Authority Against Corruption states in an announcement that it is not permitted to conduct any investigation once a criminal investigation has already been initiated by the Law Office of the Republic or the Police in relation to the controversial video published on the X platform.
It adds that what it will do is remain in continuous communication with the Law Office regarding any developments and provide any assistance in the investigation of criminal aspects of lobbying legislation, where applicable.
In today’s announcement concerning the controversial video published on the X platform by an account under the name Emily Thompson, the Authority initially states that it has been closely monitoring all developments from the very moment the video was made public.
Today, as noted, during a session involving members and officials of the Authority, the video in question was examined in detail. It further points out that many individuals—both politicians and citizens—have been calling on the Authority to proceed with an ex officio investigation into its content.
What the Independent Authority Against Corruption observes is that the Law Office moved immediately to initiate a criminal investigation into aspects of the video. As it further notes, under the legislation governing its operation, the Authority is not allowed to carry out any investigation once a criminal investigation has already commenced by the Law Office or the Police.
“What the Authority will do is remain in continuous communication with the Law Office regarding any developments. Additionally, we are willing to provide any assistance in the investigation of criminal aspects of the lobbying legislation, given that the Authority is the sole competent body for its implementation,” the statement adds.
In conclusion, the Authority states that it does not intend to make any further statements.
