Discussion Begins on Developing the Old Larnaca Airport

Transport Minister Emphasizes the Need for Immediate Action

The old Larnaca airport presents a significant development opportunity, according to Minister of Transport, Communications, and Works, Alexis Vafeades. During a visit to the site on Friday, Vafeades expressed the government’s intention to ensure the area no longer remains deserted and is instead utilized for beneficial development.

The Minister visited the site alongside Nakis Antoniou, President of the Larnaca Chamber of Commerce and Industry (EBE), and Charalambos Andreou, EBE’s Director, to assess the building’s condition and discuss potential uses for the property.

“The purpose of the visit was to evaluate the prospects, potential investments, and types of development that can be implemented in the area,” Vafeades stated. He added, “We aim to determine the next steps and the actions needed by the state in collaboration with Hermes Airports to move forward.”

Interest and Immediate Plans

When asked about investor interest, the Minister acknowledged that various parties had expressed interest in the past, but no concrete proposals have been submitted. He stressed, “This is a great opportunity, and we do not want the site to remain unused any longer. Immediate activity is necessary to capitalize on this opportunity.”

Nakis Antoniou highlighted the broader potential impact, stating, “The old airport and its surrounding area represent a vast property of the state that can be developed to benefit both Larnaca and Cyprus.”
