The Old GSP Transformation Project Set for Autumn Completion
Nicosia’s Mayor Details the Nearing Completion of the €20 Million Urban Renewal Project Aimed at Enhancing the City Center
Nicosia's Mayor, Constantinos Yiorkadjis, discussed the progress of the old GSP area's revitalization during his first meeting with President Nikos Christodoulides since taking office. The project, costing approximately €20 million, is scheduled for completion this autumn and will contribute significantly to the city's green landscape, enhancing the expansive walkway network in the capital's center, aiming to attract visitors, workers, and residents.
Mayor Yiorkadjis revealed that about 90% of the concreting work is complete, with the project's infrastructure nearing full completion. "Planting has begun and will continue, with full completion expected by this autumn," he added.
Responding to inquiries about any delays, Mayor Yiorkadjis acknowledged minor setbacks but affirmed that the project is progressing satisfactorily. He emphasized that the total cost includes a decade of maintenance, amounting to around €20 million.
The completed project will offer the capital a large-scale green space suitable for various uses, including approximately 550 parking spaces, cafés, possibly a citizen service center, an amphitheater for musical events, and a plaza with water features.
The renewed old GSP will enhance a major walkway through the center of Nicosia, which will include the new archaeological museum, the renovated municipal theater, upgraded areas around the Parliament with bike lanes, the refurbished Paphos Gate, unified sections of the Moat, Eleftheria Square, and enhanced Makarios Avenue and Stasikratous Street. "The project will notably improve the city center both functionally and aesthetically, aiming to attract visitors, employees, and hopefully residents," Mayor Yiorkadjis stated.
