Tseriou Avenue: Construction Begins Today – No Road Closures

Construction for the redevelopment of Tseriou Avenue, from the Theoktistos roundabout to Strovolos Avenue, begins today (14/10). Specifically, the first phase of the project will span from the Spyrou Kyprianou roundabout to Symis Street (Lidl) and will last eight months. Strovolos Municipality's civil engineer, Athanasios Kolyvas, explained that today all preparatory actions will begin, including measurements, markings, and preparations to prevent issues when excavation starts.

The Mayor of Strovolos explained that the project will be divided into three phases:

  • Phase 1: From the Spyrou Kyprianou roundabout to Symis Street (Lidl), with a duration of eight months.

  • Phase 2: From Symis Street to the Konstantinoupoleos junction, also lasting eight months.

  • Phase 3: From the Konstantinoupoleos junction to Strovolos Avenue.

Speaking to OffsiteNews, the Mayor mentioned that the Municipality is in continuous communication with the police, ensuring that no significant traffic disruptions or interventions will take place on the roads. He clarified that, according to the information provided to him, the road will remain open with two-way traffic at all times.

Regarding when traffic adjustments might be necessary, Mr. Stavrinides indicated that this might happen during the third phase of the project, where there could be one-way traffic, potentially 16 months from now.

He added that a dedicated communication line has been established for those affected by the project, with a specific phone number they can call. A staff member will be responsible for handling these concerns daily. Additionally, the Municipality has launched a website for the Tseriou Avenue project, where the public can stay informed about its progress.

No Full Road Closures – Traffic with One Lane in Each Direction

The Municipality’s civil engineer, Athanasios Kolyvas, explained to OffsiteNews that before excavation begins, various services need to identify where their infrastructure is located. Surveyors will then map out the routing of each service to avoid causing damage. "This week’s preparation will focus on the markings for the services and identifying areas where demolitions or processes, such as fencing, need to take place to prepare the ground for the worksite. By Friday, or at the latest Monday, the machinery will begin digging."

When asked if there will be any road closures, Mr. Kolyvas clarified that there will be no full road closures. The work will be conducted in halves, with excavation taking place on the eastern side of the road, while traffic will flow on the western side, with one lane open in each direction.

Compensation Measures for Those Affected

It is worth noting that the Municipal Council of Strovolos, in a meeting on Tuesday, October 8, decided, following a proposal by the Mayor, to implement compensation measures for those affected by the Tseriou Avenue improvement works.

As stated in the announcement, there will be a 50% reduction in waste collection fees for businesses and residents of Tseriou Avenue, as well as a reduction in the business license fee, for the year 2025. This measure aims to compensate those affected by the project.

The Municipality’s announcement clarifies that the decision was made because the Municipal Council recognises that one of the main goals of the project’s design is to protect the commercial activity of the area, which must be supported throughout the project's duration.

The Mayor, Stavros Stavrinides, mentioned that this measure is a tangible demonstration of the Municipality’s commitment to supporting residents, acknowledging the inconvenience caused by the Tseriou Avenue improvement works. He also emphasised that both he and the Municipal Council are making every effort to minimise the public’s inconvenience during the project’s implementation.
