Advancing Cyber Security in the Age of AI: Insights from the 5th InfoCom Security Cyprus 2023

Fortifying Digital Frontiers

Creating a culture of cyber security in both public and private sectors is a top priority, according to Panos Panayiotou, Advisor at the Deputy Ministry of Research, Innovation and Digital Policy. Representing the Deputy Minister, Panayiotou addressed the 5th InfoCom Security Cyprus 2023, themed "Cyber Resilience in the Age of AI," on Wednesday.

Panayiotou highlighted the Deputy Ministry's ongoing efforts to launch a comprehensive plan for securing digital spaces and protecting critical infrastructure in Cyprus. He acknowledged that there is no one-size-fits-all solution for absolute cyber protection. Different causes necessitate different responses. However, analyses often reveal the 'human factor' as a significant vulnerability in digital fraud and cyber-attacks.

He emphasized the need for all European nations, including Cyprus, to establish robust cyber security systems, especially in the face of challenges like Turkish provocations. Panayiotou pointed out the unique opportunities presented by artificial intelligence. With proper human oversight, AI can significantly enhance cyber-protection systems.

Strengthening cyber security is imperative for national safety, Panayiotou asserted. It is the duty of the state and relevant agencies to ensure the protection of information systems, networks, and the personal data of citizens. He recalled recent attacks on state sectors, noting that the Deputy Ministry and the Digital Security Authority have collaborated to safeguard the nation's critical infrastructure.
