Cyprus Marine Institute Leads 'SeaTecHub' Initiative

Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute (CMMI) has recently taken the helm in spearheading the "SeaTecHub" project, a pioneering European endeavor designed to fortify the ecosystems of Cyprus and Croatia. This collaborative initiative is centered around advancing eco-innovative technologies that drive the growth of a sustainable blue economy, bolstering the responsible management of our oceans and seas.

In an official statement, CMMI unveiled its pivotal role as the orchestrator of the "SeaTecHub" project, a venture made possible through funding from the European Union's Horizon Europe Program. This substantial €5 million initiative spans a four-year timeline and embodies an alliance among prominent institutions and organizations hailing from Cyprus and Croatia. Key stakeholders encompass a diverse spectrum, encompassing enterprises, academic bodies, and governmental entities. Among these are Fameline Energy Ltd, Geoimaging Ltd, the Cyprus Chamber of Commerce and Industry, the AKTI Project and Research Center, the Deputy Ministry of Shipping, and the Department of Fisheries and Marine Research under the Ministry of Agriculture, Rural Development and Environment.

New Era for Marine Technology

At its core, the "SeaTecHub" project is poised to engineer cost-effective Internet-of-Things (IoT) technologies and devices, geared towards invigorating marine research, industrial processes, and shipping activities. The array of devices encompass sensors, hydrophones, and online toolkits, engineered to harvest data while intricately contributing to Marine Spatial Planning (MSP). These affordable IoT devices hold the promise of evolving into fully functional market-ready products in the foreseeable future.

The CMMI underscores that collaborative efforts of project partners will seamlessly merge expertise and resources, culminating in the realization of innovative technologies and solutions. These breakthroughs are meticulously calibrated to heighten safety, enhance efficiency, and amplify sustainability within the realm of marine technology.
