Cassette Comeback: A New Spin on an Old-School Sound

Maxell releases retro-style portable cassette player with modern features

Arriving at a time when analog formats are making a notable comeback, the MXCP-P100 caters to both vintage enthusiasts and modern listeners. It features Bluetooth connectivity for wireless headphones, as well as the classic 3.5mm headphone jack for those who prefer a wired experience. Charging is done via USB-C, with a battery life of up to seven hours for Bluetooth use and nine hours with wired headphones.

Despite its tech upgrades, the player’s design is straight out of the 1980s. Large buttons for play, pause, fast forward, and rewind, along with a bronze rotary volume control, echo the era of boomboxes and mixtapes. Weighing just 210 grams, it’s designed for easy portability. It's worth noting that Maxell introduced Japan’s first audio cassette back in 1966.

The MXCP-P100 keeps things simple — there's no noise reduction or sound editing features. True to its analog spirit, it preserves the signature tape hiss and only supports stereo playback. Recording and re-recording capabilities are not included.

Available in black or white, the Maxell MXCP-P100 is priced at around ¥13,000 (approximately $90 USD) and is currently sold exclusively in Japan. However, international fans can still get their hands on one through resale platforms like eBay — though at a slightly higher cost.
