The Cyprus Marine and Maritime Institute has launched a new project, funded by the European Union, focused on applying Artificial Intelligence to maritime surveillance and the protection of the marine environment.

The project was officially inaugurated yesterday afternoon at Alexander College in Larnaca, during an event organized by the Institute. The event marked the official launch of the AXOLOTL project, which is financed by the EU.

According to the organizers' statement, “the project is funded for a period of three years through Horizon Europe, the EU’s primary research and innovation program. It focuses on the application of Artificial Intelligence (specifically deep learning) to enhance the monitoring of maritime traffic and marine biodiversity."

It was noted that "the project will utilize a wide range of data, including satellite imagery, underwater acoustic signals, and sub-sea observations."

Through international collaboration, "AXOLOTL will develop innovations and practical solutions for the Mediterranean Sea in partnership with leading research institutions from France and Belgium. Scientists from the CMMI will coordinate the project, advancing digital and environmental skills while working closely with research teams from the Flanders Marine Institute in Belgium and the University of South Brittany in France."

Additionally, "the project aligns fully with Cyprus’ Smart Specialization Strategy (S3), the EU’s Biodiversity Strategy for 2030, and the European approach to excellence and trust in Artificial Intelligence."

The launch event featured a presentation of the project, followed by a panel discussion. Officials from Cyprus, France, and Belgium attended the event.
